Turf Ideas for Compact Backyards
Small inland backyards get hot and hard to keep green. Synthetic turf, used well, makes them usable year-round.

A clean turf pad with a paver border
In a small yard, a rectangle of turf framed by a soldier course of pavers reads as intentional and makes the space feel bigger and tidier than patchy lawn ever did. The border also gives you a mowing-strip-free clean edge against beds and fence lines.
Turf plus a compact putting strip
If someone in the house golfs, a narrow putting strip along one side — even 3 feet by 20 — turns a dead margin into daily use, with the rest of the yard as low-pile turf for the kids and the dog.
Mind the heat and the base
Compact yards are often fully walled and west-facing, which means real heat. Choose a shorter pile in a cooler tone, keep a hose bib close for a quick cool-down rinse, and don’t skimp on the base — a small area still needs proper excavation, compacted lifts, and drainage fall or it will ripple.
